Custody
A chain of custody for every laptop and phone.
Every issue, return and transfer is an entry on the Asset's custody chain. No entry is ever edited; a correction is added as a new entry.

Why it matters
Who had it last is the question that matters.
When a laptop goes missing or an auditor asks about a handover, a holder column only shows today. The custody chain shows every step: who issued it, who received it, when it came back and in what condition.
Explicit actions only
Issue, return and transfer are actions with a record. Nobody can type a new holder into a field.
Two signatures
A Member records the handover, and the holder can confirm it, even without an account, through their own link.
Loans that chase themselves
Give a loan a due-back date. The day after it passes, the holder is emailed, with the issuer and admins copied.
How it works
One Asset, one unbroken record.
Issue it
Choose the Person and, for a loan, a due-back date. The Asset moves from the store to them.
They confirm
The holder confirms what they received. Anything not confirmed stays flagged until it is.
Return or transfer
Bring it back with a note on its condition, or pass it to the next Person in one step.
Mistakes are answered, never rewritten.
Recorded the wrong person? Add a correction. It says which entry was wrong and what really happened, and the original stays where it was.
Append-only
A chain nobody can edit.
Entries are added to the chain and never changed. The holder you see is the result of those entries, so the record and the register always agree.

Questions about custody
Can anyone edit the custody history?
No. The chain is append-only: entries are added and never changed. A mistake is answered with a correction entry that says what really happened.
Does the holder need an account to confirm?
No. A Person without an account confirms through their own Request Link, which asks for a one-time code sent by email.
What happens when a loan is overdue?
The day after the due-back date, the holder is emailed, and the email repeats on a set period. The Member who issued it and the admins are copied.
Can we record the condition on return?
Yes. Every return can carry a condition note, which stays on the chain with the return.
